Diehl Defence unveiled the new IRIS-T SLM/X air defense system during the Enforce Tac 2026 exhibition in Germany.
The main innovation is a universal launcher with eight cells, designed to operate both medium-range SLM missiles and the new long-range SLX interceptors on the same platform.
With the introduction of the SLX missile, the system significantly enhances its performance. Engagement range can reach up to 80 kilometers, while maximum interception altitude extends to 30 kilometers, strengthening defense capabilities against aerial threats at greater distances and higher altitudes.
The SLM missile maintains coverage of up to 40 kilometers in range and 20 kilometers in altitude, enabling a layered defense within a single fire unit. This configuration provides greater operational flexibility and a graduated response to different types of targets.
Another highlighted point is that the SLX can be integrated into IRIS-T SLM systems already in service without the need to replace radars or command centers. Development of the new interceptor is ongoing, with prototype testing scheduled for 2029, depending on timely funding approval.
